Building Streetwear in Odisha: Inside Kunsquad’s Creative Community

Ask anyone where fashion happens in India, and you’ll hear the usual suspects - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. These cities mirror global trends, rushing to keep up with London, Paris, and New York. But when everyone is chasing the same thing, the scene begins to look like a hall of mirrors - polished, current, and endlessly repeated.

Three Founders, Three Roles

Kunsquad’s DNA comes from three different strengths - Pallabi as the creative head, setting the visual direction, Abhishek managing the brand side (campaigns, collaborations, and the cultural positioning of Kunsquad), and Priyabrata making sure the garments are produced at scale without losing the craft.

Together, they’re proof that building a brand isn’t about one visionary. It’s about three different minds locking in on the same vision and pushing from different angles.

For them, Bhubaneswar isn’t a limitation. It’s an advantage. “Here, there’s room to breathe, room to grow,” says Pallabi. “We don’t feel like we’re competing with anyone. We’re just building what feels right for the city.” This space allows them to experiment with streetwear in local and authentic ways.

Our People, Our Story

Inside the workshop, the founders spend long days tweaking, learning, and improving with every sample. From fabric testing to pattern discussions with the masterji, it’s a cycle of trial and error that brings each collection to life.

“We’ve built a community that gives opportunities to local artisans - like women skilled in hand embroidery, and pattern masters- who once had to leave their hometowns and families for work,” says Priyabrata. “Their dedication has become the backbone of our collections. Keeping production rooted here keeps our craft alive and our community thriving.”

Even beyond the workshop, the spirit of togetherness carries through. Shoot days bring their own chaos: early mornings, late nights, and countless retakes for that one perfect frame. Exhausting? Absolutely. Worth it? Always.

From Bhubaneshwar, With Love: Pop-Ups

Every pop-up feels more like a reunion. The team carries Bhubaneswar in their suitcases, setting up in Delhi, Punjab, Bangalore and suddenly, strangers turn into community. People stop, try things on, share their stories, and find pieces of themselves in the clothes.

For Kunsquad, it’s putting their culture on the streets and meeting people where they are. And often, those moments of connection - the way someone styles a tee, or the story they tell about why it resonates - end up sparking the ideas that shape the next collection.

Here, We Belong.

Around Kunsquad, a new kind of ecosystem is forming in Bhubaneswar. Kunsquad is surrounded by friends who also chose to stay in Bhubaneswar and invest in the city, whether by running cafés, gyms, or bars. Together, they form a creative ecosystem where fashion isn’t just about clothes. It’s about music, art, lifestyle, and the spaces people gather.

“For me, Kunsquad is where streetwear meets cultural storytelling,” Abhishek explains. "A T-shirt or a jacket isn’t just clothing, it carries meaning, a piece of culture or art. Whether through collaborations, ancient artforms, and campaigns that spark conversations, I want every Kunsquad piece to feel like a story you can wear.”

That energy peaked in 2024, when Kunsquad hosted Bhubaneswar’s first - and arguably biggest- streetwear festival, Steez. Hundreds of young people turned up: dancers, rappers, skaters, musicians. It wasn’t a polished “capital city” launch party. It was something better, a messy, electric celebration of youth culture, finally grounded in their own city.

Walking the Line, Together

Being based in Bhubaneswar shapes everything Kunsquad does. Here, they have the space to build something fresh. Finances, logistics, and the endless back-and-forth of building a brand never stop. There are no days off, yet there’s no shortage of excitement. Every drop teaches them something new, pushes them further, and deepens their connection with the community they’re building.

And the squad is always growing - there’s room for more voices, more energy, and more people ready to be part of something rooted, fearless, and entirely their own!
